Emergency Orthodontic Care
Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but they can happen. If you experience discomfort, a broken appliance, or an injury to your mouth, we’re here to help. Most orthodontic concerns fall into two categories: issues with braces or appliances and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
Orthodontic Appliance Emergencies
Braces and appliances can sometimes become loose, broken, or bent during treatment. If you notice any of the following, please call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. Walk-in emergency visits are not available, as we want to ensure every patient receives the attention they need.
Temporary Solutions at Home
- Irritating Wire – Cover the wire with orthodontic wax or carefully tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or cotton swab.
- Loose Bracket or Band – If a bracket or band comes loose, leave it in place and call our office to schedule a repair.
- Poking or Broken Wire – Use a pencil eraser to bend it inward or trim it carefully with clean nail clippers. If discomfort persists, contact our office.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you experience a blow to the mouth, a knocked-out tooth, or a fractured tooth, follow these steps:
- Apply Ice – Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Contact Your Dentist First – If a tooth is displaced, knocked out, or fractured, your general dentist should be your first call. They have the materials and anesthesia needed to treat dental injuries.
- See Us for Appliance Repairs – If your braces or appliances are damaged due to the injury, we will adjust or replace them as soon as possible after your dental visit.
After-Hours Emergencies
If you’re experiencing severe pain outside of office hours, call our office for after-hours emergency instructions. We will provide guidance on who to contact and what steps to take to relieve discomfort until you can be seen.
If you have an orthodontic emergency, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll ensure you get the care you need to keep your treatment on track and your smile healthy!
