Custom Orthodontic Retainers
The benefits of your orthodontic treatment can last a lifetime when you commit to wearing your retainers. At our practice, we stress the importance of wearing your retainers as often as recommended, ensuring that your smile remains beautiful and straight for years to come. There are important responsibilities you must take on to maintain your results with retainers after braces or Invisalign treatment. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Retainers After Braces and Invisalign Are Important
After the removal of your braces or other orthodontic appliances, retainers are necessary to stabilize your newly aligned teeth. The bone and soft tissues surrounding your teeth are still adjusting and solidifying during the months following treatment. Wearing your retainers as instructed is crucial to prevent any unwanted shifting of your teeth, which could require additional treatment down the road.
Types of Orthodontic Retainers
Removable Retainers
Teeth can shift over time, even after your orthodontic treatment is complete. For this reason, it’s essential to continue wearing your retainers, especially during the first year after your braces are removed.
- During the first year: Wear your retainers as much as possible.
After the first year, you may switch to wearing your retainer only at night. However, it’s important to remember that your wisdom teeth may still be developing.
- Wisdom teeth development: We’ll monitor this every six to nine months with regular checkups.
- X-ray: One will be taken approximately every 18 months to track any changes in your teeth.
Once we’ve assessed your wisdom teeth and determined the best course of action, we will advise you to continue wearing your retainer at least one night a week.
As you age, the muscles around your teeth may tighten, which could cause your teeth to shift again.
- Retainer wear: Regular use of your retainer is crucial in helping to maintain your smile and prevent unwanted shifting.
Hawley Retainer
The traditional Hawley retainer is made of acrylic and stainless steel wires. It’s durable and effective for maintaining your smile.
Clear Retainer
The clear retainer is made from smooth plastic and resembles an aligner, such as Invisalign. It’s a discreet option that allows for a comfortable fit while still doing the job of maintaining your smile.
How to Care for Your Removable Retainers
To keep your retainers in excellent condition, it’s important to follow these care tips:
Clean Regularly: Wash your retainer before and after every use. Since the material is slightly porous, plaque can cling to it. Use a toothbrush and mild liquid soap to scrub off any buildup. A denture cleaning solution like Efferdent can also help remove plaque and tartar.
Avoid Heat: Retainers are made of thermoplastic materials, which can warp when exposed to high temperatures. Keep your retainers away from heaters, dishwashers, or car dashboards. Anything over 115°F can damage them.
Store Properly: Always place your retainer in its case when not in use. Pets love to chew on them, so keep them out of reach!
Replacement: Over time, your retainers may need replacing. Your treatment contract includes one set of retainers after your braces are removed. If you lose or damage them due to neglect, a replacement fee will apply. If they become loose or break, contact our office right away.
Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)
A fixed retainer is a small wire bonded to the back of your teeth. This retainer stays in place indefinitely and provides long-term stability for your smile. However, if your family dentist notices that the retainer is causing gum or bone issues, it may need to be removed and replaced with a removable retainer. Be sure to have the wire monitored at your regular six-month checkups.
